Hotel Casa Lola is decorated with a fine mixture of antiques, artisan and modern elements, reflected in every guest room. They are equipped with LCD cable TV and a minibar. |
The creation of celebrated Madrid-based architect, Ignacio 'Nacho' Garcia de Vinuesa and his partner Rafael Rios Reguera, this modern 10-room property has been shaped intelligently from two crumbling Republican mansions.
Drawing on a career designing high-end clubs, bars and restaurants in the Spain, Panama and the US, 'Nacho' has created an eclectic multi-cultural interiors palette for discerning, design-conscious travelers looking to kick back by day and trip the light fantastic in Getsemani's happening clubs and bars at night.
Also responsible for fitting out one of Cartagena's most luxurious restaurant experiences, Erre by Ramon Freixa, 'Nacho' has been creating some of Cartagena's most sophisticated spaces with his rough-cut, well-traveled style.
Nacho's eclectic interiors combine a soft spot for the Spanish pop art duo, Manolo Caceres and Jose Miranda with Feng Shui, exposed walls, up-cycled relics rescued from the renovation and bespoke rough-cut wooden furniture shipped in from Spain.
From the rooftop pool with a view of the castle to the plunge pool and fountains at ground level, water runs through the three-storey property to freshen up the shared outside spaces.
Walls of industrial-powered fans, Bali-style daybeds and the free-flowing water features help create a stylish, shady snug perfect to escape the crowds and get away from the searing Caribbean sun during the day. Sun-worshipers have the option of roasting themselves by the hotel's rooftop pool and Jacuzzi to the backdrop of San Felipe Castle.
Each of the comfortably fitted bedrooms and suites are equally well decked out and come with their own particular style. Even standard bedrooms are spacious but if you are looking for a little added legroom we suggest you opt for number 10 of the Casa Lola top 10. The master suite looking down onto the towering Nispero tree in the interior patio has floor-to-ceiling windows that offer extra light and an entertaining, inside-outside bathroom.
The adjacent property is home to Casa Lola Apartments, which can be rented individually or together for groups of up to 12 people.
Cartagena's second historic walled city has gone from no-go to must-go in less than five years thanks to some of the city's hippest new bars and restaurants.
If Centro is Manhattan, Getsemani is more Brooklyn – an up-and-coming hipster hangout trying desperately to cling to its roots.
A little rougher around the edges than the already gentrified districts of Centro and San Diego and the lofty ambitions of the beach districts, Getsemaní offers a glimpse into the more unruly historic centre of the past.
A fiercely traditional barrio offering a heady mix of bars, dancing, affordable diners, hostels and hotels for backpackers and bohemian colonists looking to mix it up with the carefree locals.
Historically populated by merchants, smugglers and freed slaves thriving from activity in the port and main marketplace, Getsemaní has always been more raucous than the hoity centre with all its regal airs and graces.
Much of the district's newest bars, follow in the city's loudest traditions.
While much of the area's carefree population are direct descendants of the hell-raisers of yesteryear it is no longer the terrifying place that rich Cartageneros used to scare their children into staying at home.
Backpackers, never averse to roughing it for a cheap place to stay have braved the bogeyman with few problems for decades and a growing number of boutique hotels and hostels have followed their lead setting up shop in some of the bigger properties on Calle Guerrero and Calle del Carretero.
Uber-hotel chains, Viceroy and the Four Seasons have plans to kick the barrio into the stratosphere with stellar openings in 2017 / 2018.
