Perú might have invented the ceviche, but it took Cartagena to turn it into an art.
For the curious ceviche-hunter on holiday however, the avalanche of ceviche options in the city makes it hard to gut the little swimmers from the big fish. So our foodie insiders are at hand to help you discover Cartagena ceviche at its very best.
We’ll take you to the undisputed king of street ceviche, with a Guinness World Book of Records under his belt and two other top restaurants where you’ll get to try signature ceviche dishes and learn how to prepare some elaborate fishy fare of your very own.
You'll learn to tell the difference between a sophisticated Peruvian inspired ceviche with tiger milk and the more traditional Cartagena taste sensations served up by some of Cartagena's foodie legends.
Watch and enjoy as they pile up the prawns, octopus and squid for hungry lips-smacking locals on their way home from work.
This foodie tour is a great way to set you up for the rest of your stay so make the most of your friendly bilingual guide, who's a mine of useful information about local history as well as the best places to eat and drink in Cartagena and will be more than happy to give you a culinary steer on this tasty trip through the city.

Great ceviche tour that took us through Cartagena We took the ceviche tour with JP, recently. We were fortunate another couple canceled, so he was our private guide for over two hours. In that time, we walked through several neighborhoods, eating different ceviches, watching them being made, and making our own tilapia ceviche with Tiger Sauce. The restaurant owners and chefs were very nice, as JP translated ingredients and directions to us. We tasted five different kinds of ceviche, as we sipped rum drinks provided, as well. JP took us through some quiet streets, which suddenly opened to plazas, then to other quiet streets, which led to fiestas. All the while, he explained the history of the neighborhoods, the different ceviches, and street music and art. Our last ceviche was from a street vendor, which you would think is crazy, but this isn’t just any street vendor. This man, whose booth has a huge sombrero over it, made the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest ceviche ever made. After an entire evening of tasting ceviches, I must say, that was the freshest, purest, tastiest, ceviche I’ve ever eaten. JP says the lines to this vendor after working hours are around the corner. We asked, and were told that in the evenings the Chef makes 400 servings of ceviche everyday. We had a great tour, learned so much, and ate our way through Cartagena! Thank you, JP! Read less
