    Our Full Review

From one fashionable neighborhood to another, Portobello House, is a sophisticated first stop on any serious foodie foray into hip and happening Getsemani.

The creation of Carlo Limata, an unabashed anglophile determined to bring some serious West London swagger to Cartagena’s foodie scene, this bistro-style diner has Notting Hill running through its DNA.

The second installment in Limata’s cross-Atlantic hospitality empire is a laid-back eatery that builds on the runaway success of his boutique bistro and hotel with the same name in one of the hottest corners of West London.

With a multi-cultural menu that’s strong on the healthy eating delights of the Med’ mixed with triumphant British comfort food, the food at Portobello House puts the Great into Britain in a fashion that would send celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s taste buds into orbit.

Whether you’re looking for the best sausage and mash or steak sandwich west of St Ives or something a little healthier, like the subtle Greek salad with quinoa or charcoal grilled vegetables, Portobello House serves up a string of foodie home runs throughout the day.

Everything on the menu is grilled to perfection on Portobello House’s Japanese robata and served with local greens that support the communal gardens of Granitos de Paz, a great Cartagena foundation, creating sustainable opportunities in Cartagena’s poorest barrios.

Open throughout the day in keeping with the bistro-style approach of its West London predecessor, the menu morphs effortlessly from breakfast to brunch, lunch into high tea and dinner without breaking its stride.

Take advantage of the free Wi-Fi, bag one of the comfortable corner tables or leather Chesterfield sofas, and hunker down for an exceptionally well-fed day working remotely in Cartagena.

Work your way through a breakfast of champions: eggs benedict, avocado toasts or a fantastic full English fry up onto some tasty lunch specials ranging from the simplest, yet tastiest of prime angus beef burgers with melted cheddar cheese to a fresh salad topped with robata grilled chicken.

Finish another tough day at the office and invite some friends over for some tasty tapas treats, grilled octopus, carpaccio and papas bravas perhaps and La Santa Maria, a kickass tequila cocktail with watermelon, coconut syrup and spearmint or any other of Portobello House's sublime cocktails.

If your favorite flavors and the comfy fixtures and fittings don’t make you feel right at home, the familiar sound track of classics from Bowie to the Beatles will. Portobello House, unquestionably a home from home in the heart of Cartagena.

  • Getsemaní

Cartagena's second historic walled city has gone from no-go to must-go in less than five years thanks to some of the city's hippest new bars and restaurants.

If Centro is Manhattan, Getsemani is more Brooklyn – an up-and-coming hipster hangout trying desperately to cling to its roots.

A little rougher around the edges than the already gentrified districts of Centro and San Diego and the lofty ambitions of the beach districts, Getsemaní offers a glimpse into the more unruly historic centre of the past.

A fiercely traditional barrio offering a heady mix of bars, dancing, affordable diners, hostels and hotels for backpackers and bohemian colonists looking to mix it up with the carefree locals.

Historically populated by merchants, smugglers and freed slaves thriving from activity in the port and main marketplace, Getsemaní has always been more raucous than the hoity centre with all its regal airs and graces.

Much of the district's newest bars, follow in the city's loudest traditions.

While much of the area's carefree population are direct descendants of the hell-raisers of yesteryear it is no longer the terrifying place that rich Cartageneros used to scare their children into staying at home.

Backpackers, never averse to roughing it for a cheap place to stay have braved the bogeyman with few problems for decades and a growing number of boutique hotels and hostels have followed their lead setting up shop in some of the bigger properties on Calle Guerrero and Calle del Carretero.

Uber-hotel chains, Viceroy and the Four Seasons have plans to kick the barrio into the stratosphere with stellar openings in 2017 / 2018.
